Christmas Services

Inside the church

The interior of the church is spacious with large supporting columns and very fine woodwork, especially on the pulpit and choir stalls. It contains some very fine stained glass windows; the East window is particularly beautiful and includes pictures of all the Apostles. The Baptistry window, with jewel like primary colours, is by Mayer of Munich and depicts Jesus with the children. The church seats about 300 people.

A kitchen is at the back of the church and is regularly used for coffee after morning services and also for various occasions in the church, such as concerts. Pews have been removed to allow space to serve refreshments and also as a play area for children during a service. The porch entrance has been fitted at the base of the walls with wood recycled from pews which have been removed from the interior and this has greatly enhanced the entrance to the church. There is a toilet in the churchyard which has been made accessible for wheelchair users. An amplification/loop system is installed. The church is carefully maintained and is kept clean by dedicated teams from the congregation.

Arthuret Church has a loyal and regular congregation who come from Longtown and the surrounding area. There is a rota system of teams to serve as readers, sidespersons and to provide Sunday coffee, tea and biscuits and some of the lay people are involved in the intercessions. Arthuret is a friendly and welcoming church to both visitors and newcomers to the area.

There are two particular services which offer opportunities for outreach in the community. The Crib/Christingle service at Christmas and the Pasche Egg Rolling service on the afternoon of Easter Day followed by egg rolling down the hill.

In the last ten years Sunday attendance has risen from 30-40 to 40-50, in the last seven years christenings have soared from 12 to 45 annually whilst weddings remain constant at around 12, as have funerals at about 40. Electoral Roll is 99.
